The St. Joe River

Open tab

A True Idaho Gem

The St. Joe River is a blue ribbon West-slope cutthroat trout fishery and free-stone river in Northern Idaho

Location

The St. Joe is located on the fringe of the beautiful St. Joe National Forest as the river's unimpeded flows run out of the Bitterroot mountains and into pristine Lake Coeur d'Alene (One of “1000 Places to See before you Die” by Shultz).  It is easily accessible from Coeur d'Alene, Spokane, Pullman, WA and Moscow, ID.

Biology and Ecology

Opportunities for unique and pure fly fishing experiences are abundant as gin clear water runs along the wild Idaho temperate conifer forests, creating deep turquoise pools and runs which makes for perfect cutthroat habitat.  The St Joe is unique in that it is considered to be the highest navigable water in the US by the coast guard.  Few rivers in the west are home to native populations of fish!  The Joe holds native west slope cutthroat only found in the inland Pacific Northwest.

Licensing

We primarily fish on the St. Joe spring through fall, though fishing is possible all year depending on conditions and your threshold for adventure.

White Pine Outfitters holds one of two permits to professionally guide trips on the St. Joe River from Avery to St. Joe City, the premier stretch for float fishing.   *Permit #19367.

Provisions

On our day floats, we provide a gourmet shore lunch set up, drinks, a professional guide with a boat, vast opportunities to catch fish, a peaceful float down the river, transportation, and all the fishing gear (flies, rods, leaders, etc.), with the exception of waders.

Itinerary

  • White Pine will arrange a time between 7-10 am to meet in the town of Calder, Idaho.
  • After a quick meet and greet in Calder, you will jump in the rig with your guide and head up or downriver to a designated boat launch to start your day on the river.
  • Expect to be in the car 10 - 30 minutes as your guide navigates to the boat launch ( a good time to quiz your guide or catch up).
  • Typical floats last 7 - 9 hours with all fly fishing gear provided (with the exception of waders, recommended in the early spring and fall).
  • Halfway through the day, we will take an hour for a stream side gourmet lunch.
  • You will be off the river by 3 pm - 6 pm depending on the season.
  • We work with a shuttle crew to get the rig back down to the take out. At which point we will drive you back to your rig or we will be taking you out at the Calder boat ramp which is where your car will be waiting.

    Day Trip Cancellations

Cancellations within 30 days will forfeit all deposit monies.

Deposits for canceled guide trips will be refunded in full with a 30 day or more notice. If we are able to re-book the guide, we will refund the deposit or apply it to a trip at a later date if it is available. If a trip is cancelled with less than 48 hours notice, the full price of the guide trip will be charged.

Our guide trips go out in all safe weather and water conditions, therefore inclement weather, water levels or undesirable fishing conditions are NOT acceptable reasons to cancel or receive a refund. Trips cancelled by the guide or mutual guide/client decision due to unsafe weather or water conditions, state or federal closures, or other uncontrollable circumstances will have the entire deposit refunded.

    We strongly suggest travel insurance.

    Multi-Day Trip Cancellations

If you find it necessary to cancel your trip please notify us as soon as possible. All deposits are non-refundable. If you cancel your trip more than 120 days prior to your departure date we will retain your deposit and credit it toward a future trip with White Pine Outfitters. If you cancel 120 day or less but more than 30 days prior to your launch date you must pay 50% of the trip price. If you cancel within 30 days of your trip departure, you must pay the full trip price. This cancellation policy applies per person. We regret we cannot make exceptions for personal emergencies. Because of this, we strongly recommend that you purchase trip cancellation and travel insurance (see Travel Insurance).

    Travel Insurance

Your pre-trip package will provide more information on the rigors of the trip you have chosen. Even though we make every effort to insure a safe trip for everyone, we strongly recommend that you protect yourself, your belongings, and your vacation by purchasing a traveler’s insurance policy. Should you have to cancel your trip at the last minute due to illness or injury, a trip cancellation policy will cover your non-refundable payments in most cases. If you become ill or injured while on a river trip, evacuation may be prolonged, difficult and expensive. Many trip insurance policies cover such events. If you choose not to purchase travel insurance you will be asked to sign a waiver. Baggage and cameras are carried entirely at the owner’s risk, and White Pine Outfitters Inc. accepts no responsibility for lost, damaged, or delayed property.
