Report:
Flows on the St. Joe River have bumped up with the recent stretch of spring rain, but things are already starting to drop back into shape. We’ve been on the water consistently this month, and overall fishing has remained solid, especially with some good afternoon bug activity.
Nymphing has been the most productive method, with larger stonefly patterns and flashy tungsten nymphs doing the bulk of the work. Streamer fishing and micro spey setups have also been moving fish, with olive continuing to be the go-to color. There have been some opportunities for dry fly fishing in the afternoons as well, particularly with mayfly and stonefly patterns coming into play.
With the higher water, focus efforts on softer edges, eddies, inside seams, and side channels. The most consistent fishing has been from Avery down, and conditions should continue to improve as flows drop a bit more.
Spring can offer some of the best fishing of the year if you hit it right. Keep an eye on the weather and falling flows, and it’s well worth getting out there. Stop by the shop if you need flies or want to dial in a game plan.
